Association awards recognize academic excellence, best practices

A number of logistics and international trade associations offer incentives to students and companies to encourage and recognize academic excellence and best practices. Some association awards are described below.

CITT Award of Excellence
Presented to a member who best exemplifies involvement in CITT, leadership, innovation and notable achievements, all CITT-certified professionals in good standing are eligible for this award. It is presented at the Annual Awards Dinner held during the National Symposium for Supply Chain and Logistics Professionals. This year, the event, Reposition 2009, takes place Nov. 4-6 at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.

CITT James T. MacKenzie
Memorial Award
Established in 1985, this award is presented for the highest academic standing in the graduating class. James T. MacKenzie was one of the founders of CITT and served as first chair of the board of directors from 1958 to 1963.

CIFFA Young Freight Forwarder
of the Year Award
Presented annually by the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association, this award recognizes an individual in the industry under the age of 29 who best exemplifies the education, skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to become an exceptional freight forwarder of the future. The winner receives $1,500 and the opportunity to represent the America’s region for the International Young Freight Forwarder of the Year Award.
Sponsored by the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations, the International Air Transport Association and the TT Club, an insurance provider, the international award is presented at the FIATA World Congress, which takes place in Geneva, Switzerland, Sept. 21-25. The winner receives a prize totalling $20,000, including the opportunity to take various training programs around the world.

SCL National Student Paper Award
In 1998, Supply Chain & Logistics Association Canada established the SCL National Student Paper Award. It is presented annually to the college or university student who submits the best original paper on logistics/supply chain management. Regional winning papers are forwarded to a national committee that selects a national winner.
The national award winner receives a $2,500 prize as well as complimentary attendance to the SCL Annual Conference, which took place April 28-29. Regional winners are awarded $500 prizes and the chance to attend a regional event in their respective area. 

SCL Green Supply Chain Award
Sponsored by Transport Canada, this award salutes supply chain management companies that have set and exceeded high standards for environmental friendliness. Recipients of this award are selected on the basis of strong environmental leadership and a firm commitment to promote green shipping standards. Nominations are accepted from all supply chain professionals, including but not limited to technology, manufacturing, warehousing, 3PL, marketing, consulting, retail, healthcare and transportation. Submissions are confidential and a nominee need not be a member of SCL. Self-nominations are accepted. The winner is announced at the SCL Annual Conference.

SCL President’s Award
This new award is given to an individual, group or company that has demonstrated exemplary vision, outstanding leadership and strategic thinking within the supply chain and logistics industry. Recipients are selected on the basis of the strong partnerships they have developed, which foster innovation and collaboration both within their own organization as well as within their external networks, the demonstrated use of best practices and the recognition they bring to the supply chain and logistics profession.

FITT Student of the Year
To recognize educational excellence in the study of international trade, the Forum for International Trade Training launched four FITT Educational Awards. Three of the awards, established in 2002, are academic and the fourth, introduced in 2006, is an achievement award. All winners are presented their awards at the Opening Reception of the annual FITT Conferences. This year, the event takes place in Mississauga, Ont., May 25-26.
Generally sponsored by Export Development Canada, the Student of the Year award is given to a student with the highest overall grade point average after completing all eight FITTskills courses. The student must have attended a FITT educational partner institution.

FITT Best Marketing Plan
This is awarded to the student who has received the highest grade for a marketing plan completed for the FITTskills International Marketing course – combined with the highest grade point average. This award is generally sponsored by Scotiabank and is open to students attending a FITT educational partner institution.

FITT Best Business Plan
The student with the highest grade for a business plan submitted to the FITTskills International Trade Management course receives this award, which is sponsored by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.

FITT Achievement Award
Students are nominated by a peer or they can nominate themselves for outstanding achievement in both community involvement and academic success. Submissions are reviewed by FITT staff and a final decision is made by a committee of Certified International Trade Professionals.
