Anew national program will soon honour fleets which have established the best workplaces in Canada’s trucking industry. “Best Fleets to Drive For: Canada” will be led and managed by Trucking HR Canada, a national partnership-based organization that develops, shares and promotes the trucking industry’s best practices in human resources and training.

The program will be powered by CarriersEdge systems and technology. Best Fleets to Drive For is an annual survey and contest conducted by CarriersEdge and Truckload Carriers Association, identifying for-hire trucking companies that provide the best workplace experiences for drivers.

The Canadian program will build on the successes of that initiative, but focus exclusively on Canadian fleets and their human resources issues. For-hire and private fleets will each have unique selection criteria, with independent programs run in partnership with the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) and Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC), respectively.

The need to promote positive human resources practices was emphasized by CTA’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Driver Shortage in Trucking. In its statement of core values to help address a long-term, chronic shortage of qualified drivers, the task force noted that compensation packages need to compete with other employment options, while issues like driver wellness and driver security should also be a priority.

Honours in the new “Best Fleets to Drive For: Canada” program will be awarded in the summer and fall, while a related series of seminars will share and promote the industry’s best HR practices. The first call for submissions will take place early in 2014.
