It has been a wonderful summer here in Atlantic Canada, with lots of sunshine. Planning is underway for Mari-Tech 2013 being held in Halifax from June 25th to 27th, 2013.  There are lots of ways to participate – as a delegate, a sponsor, an exhibitor or a speaker. Please keep an eye out for Mari-Tech’s website and notices which will be forthcoming in the autumn, and plan to “Come on Down … East” next June.

On June 2nd, the Atlantic Branch was represented at the graduation ceremony of the Canadian Coast Guard College in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Darren Kennedy presented the CIMarE Prize to newly minted engineering officer Shane Battiste from Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador. Shane achieved the highest standing in engineering subjects over the four-year cadet program. Our branch helped get Shane’s tool collection started by giving him a large metric and standard socket set along with a CIMarE ball cap and set of CIMarE coffee mugs. Congratulations to Shane and we wish him the best of success with his posting to a ship based out of the Newfoundland Region.

We again held the annual Shipbuilders and Marine Engineers Golf Tournament at the beautiful Chester Golf Club on June 14th. Over one hundred golfers enjoyed an excellent day of golf and fun. The proceeds of the tournament were donated to Bonny Lea Farms and the Mission to Seafarers, Halifax. Thanks to our members Art Robichaud and Darrell Sheppard for assisting tournament chair, John Giffen, in organizing a great day!
