At a ceremony held at the Houstonian Hotel in Houston on February 19, Fednav and the North American Marine Environment Protection Association were presented with the inaugural Lloyd’s List North American Maritime Environment Awards which recognize excellence across the range of activities within the shipping world. This award recognizes a contribution by an individual, company, or association towards an improved outcome for the environment from the maritime industry.
Fednav is Canada’s leading ocean-going, dry-bulk shipowning and chartering group and the largest operator of ice-class dry bulk carriers worldwide. The company recently ordered twelve new highly efficient handysize ships for delivery in 2015 and 2016. With new engine technology to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by approximately 33 per cent, these vessels will produce 28 per cent less GHG emissions than vessels built for Fednav 10 years ago, which were ships that were among the highest performers of their time. These vessels will all receive the Clean-Design notation from DNV GL, the world’s largest ship and offshore classification society.
In 2008, Fednav was the first shipping company in Canada to publicly publish an environmental policy for its vessels that included annual targets and expected results. Held to the highest of standards, Fednav’s fleet is regularly inspected by an independent third-party verification body that provides detailed inspection reports under an Environmental, Quality, and Safety Inspection or EQSI system.
Fednav is a founding member of Green Marine, a voluntary, bi-national programme aimed at strengthening the marine industry’s environmental performance, raising awareness of the industry’s activities, and assuring the highest certification rankings.
Parallel to these actions is a company-wide initiative to integrate a workplace environmental policy whose mandate is to reduce energy consumption and waste, and to encourage the use of sustainable products and services.
Paul Pathy, President and Co-CEO affirms, “We believe in integrating social, environmental, and economic concerns in our activities and interactions. We stand firmly behind our promise to deliver a higher standard of quality, customer service, and commitment to reducing our environmental footprint.”
Fednav wishes to thank its employees, ship managers, customers, and suppliers for their contribution and continued support, and of course, Lloyd’s List’s jury for awarding this distinction to the company.
