Position: Manager, Risk Management

Reports to: Senior Manager, Risk Management

Department: Risk Management

We are currently seeking a Manager, Risk Management responsible for ensuring cost-effective and timely claims management; providing high-quality legal advice within and across departments; identifying, developing and implementing effective loss prevention initiatives; coaching and mentoring within their area of expertise; and helping to influence the direction of the department. As the Manager, Risk Management, you’ll act as an adviser for the complex claims’ management issues.



Key responsibilities will be:

Claims Management (60%)

  • Oversee, investigate and assess disputes
  • Develop and implement claim management strategy; monitor claim progress across the organization
  • Liaise with experts, external solicitors, and third parties as needed; bring expertise and influence to develop and maintain existing relationships with key stakeholders

Loss Prevention (20%)

  • Provide expert legal advice and guidance within and across departments, notably Chartering, Operations, and SHARP
  • Analyze risk, review and advise on contracts; provide language for contracts, agreements, clauses, and messages
  • Ensure that lessons are carried forward to improve company practice; create and distribute loss prevention information data analysis to minimize future risk exposure
  • Stay current with legal developments across relevant jurisdictions; distribute content as appropriate

Department Management (20%)

  • Proactively coach, mentor, and monitor the performance and development of less experienced team members
  • Helping set department goals; help develop and implement department policies and procedures, and evaluate their effectiveness over time
  • Using expertise to influence priority setting and decision making within the department



The ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor of Laws or equivalent
  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years of experience in maritime and shipping law, and dry shipping disputes
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of experience with maritime/shipping protection and indemnity insurance claims with an international P&I Club
  • Excellent communications skills (English; written and spoken)
  • Attention to detail and the ability to see tasks through to completion
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Competence with figures and voyage accounting
  • Ability to work within a team and across departments
  • Working knowledge of computers and basic computer programs (Outlook, Word, Excel)

Annual Salary:  $90,000-$125,000

Terms of employment: Permanent, full-time (35 hours/week)
